Toppr: first designer on learning products used by 1.2 million students
Atul Khola was the initial designer at Toppr, an Indian after-school learning app, working across online and offline experiences. He designed learning products used by more than 1.2 million students, including Doubts on Chat.
role: Product Designer (initial designer)
Context
Toppr was an after-school learning app for Indian school students, later acquired by Byju's in July 2021. Atul was Product Designer there from June 2016 to June 2018, and the initial designer across everything the company put in front of students, parents and its own sales team.
The scope kept growing while the product was still taking shape. Being the first designer in a company like that is less about any one screen and more about creating enough structure for everyone else to move.
What was done
- Designed learning products across the app, used by more than 1.2 million students.
- Designed Doubts on Chat, where a student stuck on a problem gets help in a chat.
- Gamified the management app used by the sales team.
- Worked across online and offline experiences as the company's initial designer.
- Set up enough shared structure that the product could keep expanding without redesigning from zero each time.

What this means for your project
If you are an early edtech team with one designer or none, this is the stage we know: the product is still moving, the audience is students and the buyer is often someone else. We would start with the core learning loop and a light system, which is what the Product Design Sprint is for.
