When should a startup hire its first designer?
The moment users touch a UI, you need design. Whether you need a hire is a different question, and it's mostly about cadence.

Senior or mid-level?

Should my first designer be a founding designer with equity?
If design is core to the product, yes — and expect to pay for it in equity and title. If design is support, hire mid-level and keep a studio for launches.
Can a design agency replace a first hire?
Before product-market fit, usually — cheaper, faster to start, easier to stop. After it, no; someone has to live in the product every day.
How long does it take to hire a designer?
Two to four months in the US, plus a month to ramp. A contractor takes one to two weeks.
What do designers cost outside the US?
Bengaluru senior product designers run roughly a third of US salaries; the same gap shows in agency rates ($25–49/hr vs $100–149/hr on Clutch).
