How much should a startup spend on branding?
Founders on Hacker News have paid $500 and $100,000 for a logo and been happy with both — because they bought different things. Buy the tier that matches your stage.
The tiers
| Tier | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Wordmark and type pair | $500–3,000 | Freelancer or a good studio's 'starter'; enough to ship pre-PMF |
| Lean identity | $5,000–15,000 | Mark, type, colour, basic system; Wavespace publishes $2,200 starters, Metabrand from $15k |
| Full brand system | $15,000–50,000 | Strategy, naming, identity, voice, templates; Metabrand $18–35k with site, Condensed $20–50k, non boring.gg $15–35k |
| Agency rebrand | $50,000–100,000+ | Ramotion, Koto, Red Antler tier; Twitch's rebrand reportedly $50–100k |
| Global brand agencies | $250,000+ | Pentagram, Wolff Olins — not a startup budget |
Pre-PMF: stop early
Before product-market fit, the brand is the product. A wordmark, one typeface pairing and one colour system are enough to look deliberate; every dollar past that is a bet on positioning that will change. Templates and system fonts are fine — Inter is on 17% of YC 2026 homepages for a reason — the easier win is a display face nobody else in your batch is using.
When to invest
- Positioning has held for two quarters
- You're raising and the deck, site and product disagree
- Sales is losing on 'looks like everyone else'
- You're moving up-market and the brand reads junior
When to rebrand
Rarely, and never because of boredom. Rebrand when the name blocks a market, the mark doesn't work in product, or the company changed what it does. Plan the in-product transition first; the announcement last.
What's in a brand project
- Positioning and the one sentence
- Naming (if needed) with trademark screening
- Wordmark, mark, type, colour
- Voice with examples
- Brand system in Figma: layouts, motion, social and deck templates
Questions
How much does a logo cost for a startup?
$500–3,000 for a wordmark from a freelancer; $5,000–15,000 as part of a lean identity; $15,000+ inside a full brand system.
Do I need branding before launch?
A wordmark and a type pair, yes. A full system, no.
Is a design contest (99designs) worth it?
Founders who've tried it report mediocre results even after upgrading tiers; one-on-one work with a brief beats crowdsourced logos.
How long does branding take?
Four to six weeks for a lean identity or full system; naming adds one to two.
