How to brief a design agency
Bad briefs don't fail loudly; they cost a revision round each. Write the brief before you talk to anyone — it's how you find out what you actually want.
The ten fields
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| 1. What the company does | One sentence a stranger understands |
| 2. Who this is for | The buyer and the user, if different |
| 3. The metric to move | Demo requests, activation, signup rate — one number |
| 4. Scope | Pages or screens, in a list; what's explicitly out |
| 5. Constraints | Brand rules, platform, engineering handoff, accessibility |
| 6. References — with reasons | 'Linear's pricing page because the tiers are scannable', not a mood board |
| 7. Content status | What exists, who writes the rest, by when |
| 8. Deadline and why | A raise, a launch, a Demo Day — the reason sets the trade-offs |
| 9. Budget range | Published ranges exist; hiding yours wastes both sides' week |
| 10. Decision-maker | One name. Approvals are the main source of overrun |
Template
Company: ___ does ___ for ___. Audience: buyer ___ / user ___. Metric: move ___ from ___ to ___ by ___. Scope: [list]. Out of scope: [list]. Constraints: platform ___, brand ___, handoff to ___. References: ___ because ___ (×3). Content: exists ___; to write ___ by ___ (owner ___). Deadline: ___ because ___. Budget: $___–___. Decision-maker: ___. Reviewers: ___.
What agencies do with it
A good studio reads the metric and the deadline first, then argues with the scope. If a proposal comes back that simply mirrors your list, you've hired a vendor, not a partner.
Mistakes that add weeks
- References without reasons: the designer copies the surface, not the idea
- "We'll know it when we see it": you'll see it three times
- Copy "coming soon": design waits or gets redone
- Five reviewers, no decider
Questions
How detailed should a design brief be?
One page. Ten fields, each a sentence or a list. Longer briefs get skimmed.
Should I share the budget?
Yes, as a range. Studios scope to the range; without it you get either a lowball or a Rolls-Royce.
Do I need a brief for a subscription?
A shorter one per request: goal, format, deadline, reference with a reason.
What if I don't know the metric?
Then the project isn't ready. Pick the one number the site or product exists to move.
