Hiring a design agency in India from the US, UK or Australia: what to check
India has the deepest product-design talent outside the US, at a third of the hourly cost. The gap in quality between studios is wide, and it's checkable. Here's how.

Senior Indian studios price by project, not by hour: expect $10,000–25,000 minimums at the top of the market (Thence, f1Studioz, Divami list $25k+; Parallel and non boring.gg from $10–15k), which still lands well under equivalent US quotes.

Four checks
- Named clients in your market. Not logos on a wall: case studies with a contact you can email.
- Clutch reviews from outside India. Verified reviews from US/UK/AU clients say more than a 5.0 from local ones.
- Contract and payment. An entity you can pay in USD/GBP/AUD, IP assignment on final payment, and a written scope. Wire or Stripe; no crypto, no "friend's PayPal".
- Who does the work. Ask to meet the designer before signing. The common failure is a senior pitch and a junior delivery.

- Figma, Slack, Notion, Linear — same tools
- English: not an issue at the senior end
- Public holidays: ask for the calendar up front (Diwali week matters)

Questions
Is the quality really the same?
At the senior end, yes — many Indian product designers have shipped at CRED, Swiggy, Razorpay and similar, and the best studios have US and European clients on Clutch. At the cheap end, no. Use the four checks.
How do we pay an Indian studio?
USD wire or Stripe to an Indian entity is routine; GST doesn't apply to export of services. Ask for a written scope and milestone invoices.
Who owns the IP?
You should, on final payment, in writing. Any studio that hesitates is the wrong studio.
What about the time difference with San Francisco?
It's the hardest pairing: plan a 2–3 hour live window and rely on async — work done overnight in your terms, reviewed in your morning.
